Not being able to get quality sleep day in and day out due to one or many sleep disorders may not seem like a problem that needs to be tackled. But studies reveal that if allowed to advance, it could culminate in heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and other severe conditions. What causes insomnia

Most common of all sleep disorders, insomnia troubles a majority of the population. People suffering from this disorder find it incredibly difficult to fall asleep at night, even if they lay in bed for hours on end. Studies reveal that most adults suffer from temporary insomnia at some point during their life, and in some cases, it could even be chronic.

Waking up like this multiple times could prove devastating to your physical and mental well-being.

Obesity is a common factor that causes intense snoring. Skin growth inside your nasal cavity can also cause this. Consuming alcohol, smoking, and certain relaxation drugs may be responsible as well.

Reducing alcohol consumption and avoiding smoking are the first steps. If you’re overweight, getting your body under control will revitalize its functions and help you as well. Studies have revealed that laying on your back triggers snoring, so sleeping on your sides is advised.

This can be disastrous as it cuts off the oxygen supply while you’re sleeping, jerking you awake and leaving you gasping for breath. If left untreated, this can cause severe medical conditions like heart and lung failures. Even if it doesn’t, the short-time effects like sleepiness during the day time can adversely affect your performance and cognitive well-being.

Obesity is a contributing factor. Not all, but most people suffering from sleep apnea are overweight. And it can even be a small thing, like gaining a few additional pounds.

A healthy diet and regular exercise will help you maintain your body weight. Studies have found that sleep apnea can be reduced and even cured by weight loss. If your physician has studied your sleep patterns and diagnosed you with this sleep disorder, but determined the cause as something other than obesity, they can suggest therapies designed to keep your nasal cavities open during sleep.


Narcolepsy treatment

Not as well-known as the other disorders mentioned above, but widely prevalent nonetheless, narcolepsy is a nervous disorder that induces excessive sleepiness. You’ll know it’s a problem when you are extremely sleepy and can’t get yourself to stay active and awake during the day.

Why do you have it

Narcolepsy is caused by a hypocretin chemical deficiency, which is responsible for keeping you awake. In some instances, this could be a hereditary disorder. It could also be triggered during particular seasons or in conjunction with other illnesses like a bacterial throat infection.

Remedies & prevention

Narcolepsy doesn’t have a definitive cure as of yet and is often overlooked during diagnosis. Sleep enhancing medicines at night and cognitive enhancers like Adderall during the day can be used to combat this disorder. Another alternative is to resort entirely to natural remedies, like having power naps and caffeinated drinks during the day.


Sleepwalking treatment

During sleepwalking, a person walks and carries out actions while in light stages of sleep. Returning to bed minutes later, people usually have no memory of the incident in the morning. If not for prior knowledge of the disorder, a spectator wouldn’t know that the sleepwalker isn’t in control of their actions, as they seem completely awake.

Why do you have it?

Studies on the disorder have not been able to determine what causes it. But, they have observed that it is more common in children than in adults, during the early stages of childhood. The disorder is considered to be hereditary, with a high likelihood of a child sleepwalking if one of the parents does as well.

Remedies & prevention

Sleepwalking doesn’t have a cure. Attention should be directed at making the surroundings safe, so the sleepwalker doesn’t hurt themselves. Any doors or windows should be locked to prevent them from walking out.
